“The Tile Man’s Candle”
I am here and I am there.
I am vast and I am strong.
Look at my story through weather and wear.
Mine is the story of many.
I’ve supported the weight of your strife.
I’ve witnessed the growth of your son.
I’ve reliably served your wife,
babies, strangers, friends, and family.
dogs, crumbs, toothpaste, ice cubes, and runaway berries,
dirty shoes, wet socks, clean feet, and squeaky paws.
I’ve felt the splash of tears, both happy and sad.
I’ve felt the crash of glass, and I’m always impressed…
At how often the Dossett’s choose to laugh.
Thanks to my quality, I’m a feature of support.
Rather than another distraction to report.
If I could talk, I wouldn’t stop,
but I’m just here to catch what you drop…
to occasionally catch your eye,
but to go virtually unnoticed…
I hear that there are countless storytellers,
Much like me, installed to other lives through your craft and toil.
Yours is the candle with a wealth of oil.
For John Dossett.
